Beetsterzwaag used to be a substantial village because of the influential nobility that lived there. The many monumental buildings in the Hoofdstraat, and the gardens that define the image of Beetsterzwaag, are the silent witnesses of the rich, noble inhabitants of the 18th and 19th centuries. The most famous building is Lyndensteyn (1821). Drive very quietly or park your car and walk down the Hoofdstraat, in order to have a quiet look at the other monumental buildings situated here, including: Bordena (1858), Lycklamahûs (1824), the Eysingahuis, the Fockensstate , the Cantonal Court (1811) and the Harinxmastate (1843).
