From Lauwers to Wad, road trip around Lauwersmeer

There are those places in the north that make your heart beat faster. Without a doubt, this is the case in Lauwersmeer National Park. Whether you are on the Groningen side of the lake, or on the Frisian side. Driving around the lake, the daily hustle and bustle immediately falls away from you, and you feel like you're on holiday. This is how magisterial nature and vistas embrace you.

The route takes you through the history of the area, which can be called a natural wonder.

Why the name: "From Lauwers to Wad"?

The Wadden Sea and the once great river De Lauwers together, created the Lauwerszee. After the lake was closed off to the sea (1969), its relationship with the UNESCO Wadden Sea region remained emphatic.

Lauwersmeer is an area with international allure; from all over the world, natural scientists come to see with their own eyes the natural miracle that took place here. Every year, hundreds of thousands of birds come here for rest and food, with the greatest reward being the arrival of the great white-tailed eagle, which feels at home here and comes to nest every year.

Another highlight: its designation as an official 'Dark Sky Park'. On a clear night, stargazing offers a true spectacle, with highlights including spotting the Milky Way and sometimes it is even possible to see the Northern Lights.

The route 'From Lauwers to Wad' shows you the great variety of landscapes, as well as those picturesque old fishing villages, historic waterworks and you dive into some unique stories about some legendary figures.
