One day is obviously not enough to discover all the beauty of this area of Southeast Friesland. But that doesn't matter. Then you have a very good reason to come back again. That's an instant delightful prospect.
You're not going to see big lakes with the sails of sailboats, but mainly a multifaceted landscape from forest, heathland and peat bogs, to meadows, estates and sand drifts.
You drive along the old canals with their locks and very photogenic little bridges. Also very pretty are the little churches and belfries in typical Frisian villages.
It is a beautiful setting in which wayward peat diggers and the Frisian nobility played the leading roles. The rich landowners once laid out this part of Friesland - for their own pleasure and amusement, of course - with numerous estates and woodlands. You can thank them for that now, it is truly enjoyable in this beautiful part of Friesland.
Tip: when you get to the end of the route - at regional shop De Gelder - be sure to step inside. De Gelder has been voted the very best regional shop in Friesland. Don't miss it.
