Imagine a magnificent drive through the UNESCO Wadden area, along the intriguing coast of the Dollard, through the Grain Republic with its majestic Oldamt farms, through Ede Staal's Groningse Hogeland, and arriving at the Lauwersmeer National Park. The Groningers would say, "'t could be less", or, "there is no better".
In the distance, you see the coastline of Germany with the port city of Emden, you recognise the contours of the German Wadden Island of Borkum and of Schiermonnikoog. Around you, you experience a unique and rare wide area. If it is clear, in some places you can see so incredibly far, without disturbing the landscape, except for the towers of the many medieval churches in the Groningen countryside. As empty as the landscape seems, the history, and the stories, are so extraordinary as you drive through the beautiful villages and towns.
This three-day package is for people who are interested in heritage, in unique nature with an insane abundance of birds, and who enjoy touring through a grand landscape.
For this trip, we have chosen the car puzzle route Grain Republic as a regular feature, and tips for discovering Het Hogeland and the rest of the Wadden region. The other way round is also possible.
