Wat kun je verwachten?

Do you know how a Westerner thinks about our beautiful Hogeland? For many, the first thoughts will be: "Clay, cold and crunchy". But then those people have never been here. Anyone who sets foot here once will be gripped by the strength and splendour of the area. You go home with a loud "WOW".

The famous Groningen singer Ede Staal once sang a very beautiful song about it.

The Hogeland is an area of small villages and towns with pretty names like Noordpolderzijl, Stitswerd, Doodstil, Kleine Huisjes, Usquert and Baflo.

With Niehove (just south of Het Hogeland) it has the most photogenic village, and with Winsum the most beautiful village in the Netherlands. It has the most medieval churches in a 360-degree landscape.

You can see the sun set magisterially behind the horizon. It is located on the UNESCO world heritage site De Waddenzee.

Yes, so beautiful is the Hogeland that it has long been a source of inspiration for many artists.

With the Hogeland car puzzle route, and tips for other excursions, you can experience it all for yourself.

However, if you prefer to be in a wooded area with shelter, you will be in for a rude awakening on Hogeland. The wind is always blowing, and it comes from all directions 😉

For delicious dining, several tips are provided.

You can end the day in your comfortable hotel room or B&B.

Day 1: Hogeland two-day package

On the date you booked, drive to the starting location of the "Hogeland" route. That is between the villages of Den Ham and Oldehove, at the straw hotel Hayema Heerd, about 15 km north-west of the city of Groningen. .

There you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a delicacy, and if you want, have a look around this special B&B/hotel.

Here you will also receive a packed lunch for the road.

The route first takes you through a part of the National Landscape Middag-Humsterland, with the famous mound village of Niehove as your first stop.

Then the road winds its way to Het Hogeland. While driving, you will discover that this area was quite prosperous in earlier years. The large farms with extensive estates bear witness to this, and the towns are richly endowed with large notary and merchant houses. The difference between where it used to be poor and rich is also immediately noticeable.

The influence of the Wadden Sea can be seen in several places. Wherever possible, you are invited to climb the Wadden dike and look out over the water and the salt marshes.

Along the way, you are sure to find some nice locations for some refreshments. The route description also provides some tips for this.

Highly recommended for dinner: you will find some nice and good restaurants in Molenrij, Baflo and in Winsum, among others.

Before or after dinner, drive to your hotel or B&B where you can spend the night in comfort. Time for check-in and other details will be provided when you book.
