Few areas in the Netherlands are as richly endowed with surprising landscapes, ancient forests, beautiful stream valleys and stunning nature reserves as Westerwolde.

The car puzzle route 'Nature paradise between two ramps' passes by the region's main attractions. The start of the route is already special - in Oudeschans. From there, you soon dive into old smuggling stories, and then enter the region with the former riches of the Oldambt grain farmers. Of particular note is Smeerling, the romantic hamlet from the 18th century, set in the lovely nature of the Ruiten Aa. After numerous stories and beautiful places, the route ends in the famous fortress Bourtange. Bourtange was recently listed as one of the 10 "Worlds most Beautiful cities" in a leading international magazine. Naturally, you'll want to see that for yourself.

Day 1, Westerwolde two-day package

On the date you have booked, you will drive to the starting location of the route :'Westerwolde, Nature Paradise between two ramps'. This is in the pretty historic fortified town of

If the restaurants are open, you can pick up your route pack and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a delicacy. If the catering facilities are not open on your day of arrival, there will be a stop along the way, where you can have coffee/tea and a nice piece of cake/pastry.

You will receive information about this when you confirm your route, plus the address where lunch is planned that day.

Today you will discover the region on a beautiful route through the southernmost part of Groningen, the Westerwolde, route: 'Nature paradise between two ramparts'.

It is a puzzle route, but driving the route without worrying about the questions is of course also possible. Just relaxed touring, with plenty of moments along the way to get out for new discoveries.

Of course, to get a taste of the atmosphere of the route, you can start the day with a short walk around Oudeschans, along the old rampart.

Driving through beautiful Westerwolde, you'll hear stories about old smuggling roads along the German border and about Wedde Castle.

Along the way, you will get tips for lovely walks, e.g. in the nature of the Ruiten Aa and for places to have a drink.

The route ends in the famous fortress of Bourtange. There are two restaurants in the fortress where you can enjoy a delicious dinner.

Should there be availability, your overnight stay is booked in one of the hotel rooms in the fortress, or else in a special B&B nearby. Time for check-in and further details will be sent along with the booking confirmation. .

Day 2 starts off rested with a delicious breakfast.

After checking out, this day is yours to fill in.

Didn't get around to it on the first day? Of course, leaving Bourtange without having visited the Fortress Museum is not possible. ;-). Opt for a guided tour of the fortress and a visit to the Fortress Museums is also highly recommended.

Accommodation: You stay overnight in a cosy regional hotel or comfortable B&B in the nearby region from where the route 'Nature Paradise between two ramps' is mapped out.

First, we request availability at the Fortress Hotel Bourtange. In this establishment, you can stay overnight in e.g. the Captain's room.

If no hotel room is available in the fortress on your chosen date, we will book an alternative in a comfortable B&B or regional hotel in the nearby region. Westerwolde offers plenty of choice of good and atmospheric overnight locations.

If you have special wishes, feel free to let us know. We will do our best to fulfil your wishes. If additional costs are involved, we will coordinate in advance.

Conditions

Booking and payment After booking, you will receive a confirmation from us and also the invoice. A down payment of at least 50% of the total travel sum is due within 3 days after sending the travel confirmation. The remaining amount is due no later than 4 weeks before the booking date.

If the trip is booked within 4 weeks of departure, the entire travel sum is payable at once.

Cancellation If you cancel the booking, the following cancellation fees are due:-

within 42 days up to 30 days before the day of departure: 40% of the travel sum
within 30 days up to 7 days before the day of departure: 75% of the travel sum
within 7 days before departure: 100%.
