You'll just have such a 'Backyard'! During this two-day package, you will enjoy:

to the UNESCO monument Kolonie van Weldadigheid (which is less than 40 km from the city of Groningen).

Upon entering Veenhuizen, you suddenly find yourself in a completely different world.

It tells you about the unique social experiment that was internationally emulated in its time. You can do a guided walk (with audio support) past the various monumental buildings and the surrounding grounds. Visiting the Prison Museum is highly recommended. If you're on time, you can take the 'Boevenbus'.

Tip: you can enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant Bitter and Sweet, on the grounds of the Colony.

Day 1: two-day package "Backyard of Groningen - UNESCO Colony of Weldadigheid, Veenhuizen

On the date you booked, drive to the starting location of the route "De Achtertuin van Groningen", in Peize.

There - before you start the route - you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a delicacy. Upon confirmation of the route, you will receive the address where lunch is planned that day.

The route takes you through a fascinating region, connecting new and old nature, from old Groningen chic riches to pre-history in the old Drenthe moors. You will hear about social dealings with poor slobs and psychiatric patients in the last century and, as the climax, the story of the internationally renowned social experiment in the Colony of Weldadigheid.

Along the way, you are sure to find some nice locations for some refreshments,

Highly recommended for dinner: Restaurant Bitter & Sweet, near the Colony of Weldadigheid in Veenhuizen.

Before or after dinner, drive to your hotel or B&B where you can spend the night in comfort. Time for check-in and other details you received when booking.

Day 2: Two-day package 'Backyard Groningen - UNESCO Colony of Weldadigheid

Day 2 starts off rested with a delicious breakfast.

After checking out, this day is yours to fill in.

Some suggestions:

did you miss out on visiting the Prison Museum on the first day? If so, that would definitely be a must.
Or also visit the other complex that is part of the UNESCO heritage Colony of Weldadigheid, in Frederiksoord.
Visit the Hunebedcentrum in Borger
Rent a bike from the accommodation and take a scenic bike ride. Drenthe is known as the ideal cycling province.
Ask at the accommodation for special tips. They will be happy to advise you.

Can't get enough after one night's stay? We can well imagine. Booking an extra night is always possible.

Travel date: can be booked all year round.

Travel price: € 159.00 per person. (based on two people minimum). Additional persons on request.

Included: LocalDrente route 'The Backyard of Groningen' * 1x coffee/tea with cake * 1x lunch (packed) * 1x overnight stay + breakfast * booking and administration fee.

Not included: other meals and drinks * entrance tickets to Kolonie van Weldadigheid Museum * parking costs for own car * cost of refuelling/recharging the car * other personal expenses.

Accommodation: you will spend the night in an attractive regional hotel or comfortable B&B in the nearby region from where the 'Backyard of Groningen' route has been mapped out. If you have special wishes, feel free to let us know. We will do our best to fulfil your wishes. If there are extra costs involved, we will discuss them in advance.

Conditions

Booking and payment: After booking, you will receive a confirmation from us and also the invoice. A deposit of at least 50% of the total travel sum is due within 3 days of sending the travel confirmation. The remaining amount is due no later than 4 weeks before the booking date.

If the trip is booked within 4 weeks of departure, the entire travel sum is payable at once.

Cancellation: If you cancel the booking, the following cancellation fees are due:-

- from 42 days to 30 days before the day of departure: 40% of the travel sum

- from 30 days to 7 days before the day of departure: 75% of the holiday price

- from 7 days before departure: 100%.
