Few people know that the Westerkwartier, the region south-west of the city of Groningen, is a unique collection of diverse landscapes and characters.
No region in the north is as varied as the Westerkwartier.
Could it be because the area is so centrally located between Drenthe and Friesland? And in the north has the typical Groningen salt marsh and mound landscape?
Who knows.
In the Westerkwartier, Frisian, Drenthe and typical Groningen are mixed in a wonderful way.
Delve into the history of the Westerkwartier while seeing the region's main attractions. Visit the estates where the so-called Jonkers of Groningen used to live (Borg Nienoord and the Coenersborg). Discover the stories and adventures of the Netherlands' most famous explorer - Abel Tasman - who was born in the Westerkwartier. There is a museum and footpath named after him.
In Aduard, visit the Monastery Museum, and the former infirmary, of what was the largest monastery in Western Europe in the Middle Ages. Many buildings in the region were later built with the former monastic bricks from this monastery.
